Abstract

This course builds on Aquatic Ecology I and cannot be taken separately. It aims to extend the covered concepts and apply them to natural and experimental systems. The course contains research projects, a 1-day excursion to a lake as well as a 3-day excursion to rivers.

Objective

Students will work together in small teams to conduct research projects embedded within research groups at Eawag. During the research projects, students will learn the principles, methods and standard practices of doing research in aquatic ecosystems. Students will measure and interpret biological and environmental data (e.g. from field work and experiments). They will learn to analyze data, to orally present findings, and to write a scientific report. Separately, during two field excursions students will get to know both lake and rivers systems.

Content

The field excursions include a 1-day excursion to a lake (Greifensee) and a 3-day excursion to a river (Glatt, Niederuzwil). Additionally, students will conduct research projects in 2-3 person groups, working closely within individual research groups at Eawag.
