Architecture defines the spaces in which we live and work in during every moment of our lives. We will study the large scale in which the work of an architect has an impact on the biggest possible amount of people. A house as big and complex as a whole village. The design work is understood as an investigation on the daily conditions of our times, through the media of architecture.

The starting point of the semester in the form of existing, former diploma topics not only offers students the possibility to develop an independent, critical design position, but also the freedom to choose the scale that most interests them.

The semester will focus on space as the language of architecture. Real-life constraints, requirements and disciplines will found the basis for the research in the form of fast-pace design exercise

The semester proposes to explore the possibilities of existing structures while critically assessing the conservation of their function, the value of their features and their spatial qualities.

The semester is based first on a thorough and precise description on milestones of the history of architecture, second on a comparison between the initially planned, originally built and current condition and third on defining a program and a detailed design to enhance its spatial experience for a larger public.

The design process is part of preparing for the daily professional life of an architect. Point of departure for this semester will be nine case studies, consisting of existing, curated competition briefs from different countries and fields of work. All of the cases describe accommodation for research and teaching activities at universities.

Almost no other profession than the work of an architect allows insights into the living habits and working environment of such a variety of people. This studio is centered around the familiarization and the investigation of different work- and life conditions, not as social or political study, but as the basis for developing and connecting architectural spaces.
