Abstract

The starting point of the semester in the form of existing, former diploma topics not only offers students the possibility to develop an independent, critical design position, but also the freedom to choose the scale that most interests them.

Objective

The goal of our design studio is to give students the possibility to improve skills in finding, developing and representing an architectural concept on a given architectural brief. Former diploma topics become a new starting point for an independent and individual work.

Content

For many years students of the Department of Architecture were working on the same topics to achieve their diploma. All studios offered a choice of three different topics referring to three different scales of architecture. Topic A indicates the large scale of urban interventions. Topic B covered the scale of one entire building and topic C related to small buildings or interiors giving students the possibility to focus on details. The Diploma was a first step into the professional practice of architecture and, for a large majority, the last most important reality check of an academic career. The starting point of the semester in the form of existing, former diploma topics not only offers students the possibility to develop an independent, critical design position, but also the freedom to choose the scale that most interests them. The semester will include additional inputs about former diploma works done at the chair as well as insights from ongoing work in the office.
