On the basis of a currently relevant building task - the conversion and extension of multi-storey office buildings into residential buildings - we are testing whether and how a high ecological standard can be achieved in urban buildings. We are interested in the interplay between the existing building and the new part in terms of design, use, construction and also ecological conception.

We will concentrate on the dual function of living and working, taking as an example existing office buildings in Zurich earmarked to be partially transformed and expanded into apartment complexes.Our urban-planning, architectural, functional and constructional interests focus on the combination of occupancies in the same building and on the suitability of such new apartments for home-office work.

Ecological issues have been current since the 1970s, but, despite all attempts to counter the trend, worldwide energy consumption has continued to increase unabatedly since then, The main problem is the associated greenhouse-gas emissions, a large proportion of which are caused by buildings, i.e. their construction and operation.
