Abstract

The course deals with spatial phenomena at the interface of film and architecture. The alternating influence of these two media will be analiyzed, the dispositions of perception and effect will be compared and thus will sharpen the view for a architectural way of looking at space.

Objective

The examination of filmic space situations and performance discloses new perceptions of architecture which will be studied on behalf of film analyses and experimental topics. During the course space-effective creative means such as editing or framing will be introduced and discussed under perceptive aspects. Mediality within spatial perception can thus be integrated into a development of cultural history and leads towards a conception which goes beyond the limits of architecture and stimulates new processes of design.

Content

From certain points of view, it may be true that the film is "modern art par excellence". From a historical point of view, this is as inevitable as it is miraculous appearance on the threshold of the 20th century; among them is its proverbial reproducibility, which has made the film strip, which has been copied a hundred times, wrapped in rolls and shipped around the world, a prototypical work of art of the mass age; This includes, after all, what made the film, at least superficially, a stimulant for related tendencies in modern architecture: the moment of movement and the idea of space penetration. At the same time, the film is nothing more than the return and beginning of an age-old dream of mankind: the re-creation or re-creation of the world in its own image. Along the interface between film and architecture, the seminar highlights the history of cinematography through analysis selected films and texts. In the past semester, the early cinema, the silent film and the classic cinema of the 1940s and 1950s were in the center, in the spring we will focus on the varieties of late and postmodern film from 1950 onwards.
