In the middle of the "Neue Hard" area in Zurich sits the office complex built in 1972, which first served the travel group KUONI as its main location and today provides workspace for the ZKB. Often renovated and extended in recent years, the large structure now calls for climate-friendly visions so that the building stock can meet future demands and become part of a livable urban neighborhood.

We are focusing on the disused cement factory in Brunnen. The centrality of the area and the numerous unused existing buildings offer the opportunity to integrate public uses and contemporary forms of housing into a condensed overall urban vision. Circular materials and hybrid construction principles will be used to extend the lifespan of the robust existing buildings.

Everything is transformation. The world we live in is being increasingly densified, not only in terms of what is built but also of ecosystems, social interactions, economic interests, political relations. In this context, we must look seriously at the existing: What qualities are there? What is really obsolete? What can we enhance? How to start with what is already there?

Through the method of public drawing, students learn to observe, analyze, and evaluate a public space. Further, students conceptualize, plan and construct a furniture scale intervention to improve the usability and potential for interaction within the given public space. Research-based design, in the framework of architectural behaviorology is a guiding design principle of the course.

The course focuses on public space design by intervention with a 1:1 mockup model. Through analysis, research and public drawing students identify actors, in accordance with architectural behaviorology, which lead to a public space being well used. They then implement the research into a small-scale project to improve an existing public space. Finally, they test their project by observing its use.

What will the home of tomorrow look like?Designing a project in four steps:1. Envisioning scenarios about the future of housing.2. Design of a spatial system to the scenario.3. Contextualize the abstract project within a selected site in Basel.4. Developing of the real project.

During this semester we will confront our interpretation of Ideal Architecture with the complexity of planning and designing for the contemporary society. Working with existing buildings and structures in the context of Swiss agglomeration, we will re-discover their latent potential and transforming it through critical and future-oriented design.

Architectural Design IV: The University and the City (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)

Entwurf IV: Die Universität und die Stadt (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)

052-0542-25L 2025S 14 Credits BSC D-ARCH

In the second semester we will confront our ideas of an Ideal Architecture with the complexity of a real project in Switzerland. Through visionary and speculative scenarios we ask ourselves what spaces are needed for learning and studying. Following a complementary methodology we will design buildings and infrastructures for the expanding University of Basel.

In 2020 Spring Chair of Architectural Behaviorology studies on designing architecture for new livelihoods focused on cattle breading, aiming to design Urban Rural Commons. Our field of study will be in the valley of Goms, in Wallis, an intra-alpine valley. Students propose the Urban Rural Commons to locals by drawings and models.

Architectural behaviorology focuses on creating better accessibility to local resources. Urban-rural commons is defined as a notion of commons in rural and urban realms. In HS2020, we focus on designing architecture for fruit culture in Valais. Students will examine ethnographic approach by actor network drawings and propose an project for Urban-rural commons through drawing and models.

We need Informal Learning Space, why? The studio, supported by ETH Innovedum, is jointly run by the Chair of Architectural Behaviorology, the "Newrope" Chair and the Chair of Cognitive Science. It develops from research and 1:1 mock-ups of HS21 towards realizations of interventions in FS22. Students tackle 3 environments at ETH: D-ARCH studios space ONA, Library InfoCenter, and D-USYS classroom.

What is a learning space at ETHZ? The studio supported by Innovedum, is jointly run by the Chair of Architectural Behaviorology and the NEWROPE Chair with the Chair of Cognitive Science. It develops from research and 1:1 mock-ups in HS2021 towards realizations of interventions in SS2022. Students tackle 3 environments: architecture studio space, semi-public library, and conventional classroom.
