Architectural Design IV: How do we live together? (De Vylder)
Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:32:55
Abstract
HOW DO WE LIVEDo we live a houseOr do we house a life? How. Do. We. Live.
Objective
Do we know HOW we live TOGETHER? Do we know enough HOW we live TOGETHER? HOW do things around us shape the way we live TOGETHER? HOW do we live with the things around us? WHAT are the conditions around us? WHAT makes our habits? HOW do habits change conditions? How do we live TOGETHER? This studio will be organized in 3 MOVEMENTS for the BA students. DIP will start their JOURNEY with MOVEMENT 0 adding one MOVEMENT. The studio will this semester explore the bA-d format. Experimental, nonetheless merging knowledge and energy, BA and DIP will TOGETHER learn about DOMESTIC AND TERRITORIAL BORDERS, and how do we live TOGETHER around and across. The DIP students will work independently, exchanging with one another, and taking an active part in the bA-d studio. Similarly, BA will form practices of 4 students, taking part in a larger family, all together building up the bA-d studio with DIP students. Looking at the same CONTEXT, we will look at a STREET, where BUILDINGS have been chosen on each side of the BORDER. OFFICE BUILDINGS, SPORTS BUILDINGS, INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS, PARKING BUILDINGS, FAIR BUILDINGS, REMNANT BUILDINGS. We will work with 333% DENSIFICATION, 33% ADAPTATION, 3% PRECISION. Depending on the explored CONTEXT, each PRACTICE and DIP will answer with a coherent PROGRAMM. It is an opportunity to look critically and responsibly at urges of time to LIVE TOGETHER. As well as the technical aspects of the NORMS, and how they are applied to the gathered knowledge of everything that was learnt through different actions of LIVING last semester, and the existing POTENTIAL of the space and urban fabric.

BADThis studio is a studio on what it always has been and will be about : LIFE.bA-d stands for bachelor diploma : TOGETHER.This semester, the studio will work out a new experimental teaching concept that is on search for not just a combined studio teaching in bachelor and diploma but a teaching that indeed combines but goes beyond. The good occasion of HOUSE EUROPE — the overarching theme introduced by Station+ — will be given perspective from out of that question on HOME. As it is experienced in Bachelor already, the topic of How do we live TOGETHER will now be enhanced all together. The bA-d studio seeks not just to combine studio teaching for both bachelor and diploma, but to go beyond a mere combination. Many shared moments and shared work will structure the semester, in a combination between deepening knowledge and joining forces :STUDY SITESWe will look carefully at the same sites, the same buildings, sharing with each other the technical knowledge, challenging each other towards DENSIFICATION, ADAPTATION and PRECISION. We will build TOGETHER and SHARE drawings, in order to join FORCES.READINGBOOKS are an essential tool to understand the world in which we live, they give us KNOWLEDGE and therefore FREEDOM. We invite students to READ ALOUD TOGETHER the list of TEXTS we selected and eventually to BRING THEIR OWN one as the list is a DYNAMIC INSTRUMENT and is open to any addition during the semester. While READING TOGETHER we REFLECT TOGETHER. We SHARE through our VOICE the same SPACE and we configure new spaces. Books CONNECT. While we LISTEN to our VOICES, our ACCENTS, our RHYTHMS, we MEET along the pages, we ENGAGE and we do DISCOVER. Texts are about BORDERS, as intended from the POLITICAL to the PHILOSOPHICAL realm, from the DOMESTIC to the more PERSONAL and INTIMATE sphere.SHARED REVIEWSThe reviews and wall debates are moments of discussion where EXCHANGE is key. Diploma students review bachelor students, bachelor students review diploma students, and so on. OPINIONS, CONTRADICTIONS and KNOWLEDGE is freely shared.TEACHINGTeaching teams will be on one hand clearly appointed, and will cross positions. TEACHING TODAY will only find a future if we dare to challenge and shift the unquestioned methods of teaching.bA-d NOW!
