Abstract

Introduction and outline of the history of art and architecture from the late middle ages to Mannerism.

Content

Following the program begun in the first year of study, the lecture courses of the third and fourth semesters offer an exemplary introduction to the history of architecture and art from the Renaissance to the modern era. The material dealt with in the third semester encompasses the beginnings and expression of post-medieval architecture and art in Europe. Particular emphasis is laid upon Renaissance and Baroque architecture in Italy, France and Germany. In the fourth semester, the primary tendencies in architecture since the Enlightenment will be discussed profoundly. These include Neo-classicism, 19th century Historicism and the reform movement at the Turn-of-the-Century. In addition to communicating basic knowledge of the history of architecture by examples of the most important buildings of every epoch, another aim of the lecture will be to show the correlation between architectural concepts and cultural, political and social general framework. The students will be introduced to methodical possibilities in the history of architecture. An intensification of visual sensibility and a sharpened consciousness of intellectual challenges, imposed by images, will be welcomed results.
