Abstract
Basics of structure, formation and function of cells and biomacromolecules, as well as basic classical and molecular genetics and the mechanisms of evolution.The lecture is the first in a series of two lectures given over two semesters for students with biology as as a basic subject.
Objective
The understanding of the basic principles of structure and function of living organisms, with particular emphasis on higher plants, from the molecular to the organismic level.
Content
The chemical framework for life, water and the suitability of the environment for life, carbon and the molecular variety of life, the structure and function of biological macromolecules, introduction to metabolism. A tour through the cell, membranes and their structures and functions, cell respiration and the creation of chemical energy, photosynthesis, cell reproduction.
