Objective

To acquire basic knowledge on freshwater fish ecology and fisheries biology. To understand functional relationships between the ecological state of the aquatic environment, the fish populations and human impacts on the waters. To develop the ability to handle basic fish-related problems on lakes and running waters.

Content

The fish species of Switzerland, their biology and zoogeography. The relationships between the fish and its envi-ronment; habitats, feeding, reproduction, population ecology. Anthropogenic modifications of the environment and mitigation and rehabilitation measures. Fisheries management, stocking, production, yield. Case studies of some fish-related problems of today. Legal basis and economic significance of fisheries in Switzerland. The lecture in-cludes a two-day field course.
