European Dimensions of Spatial Development and Planning
Die Europäischen Dimensionen von Raumentwicklung und Raumplanung
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:25:15
Abstract
The course will explore the various European dimensions of spatial development and planning, the European, the national and the metropolitan dimension. It will discuss the spatial challenges of economic, social, cultural development in cities and regions in Europe in times of globalisation and new communication and transportation technologies.
Objective
Introduction into the European dimensions of spatial development and planning.
Content
As a consequence of global change, and resulting internationalization of the economy, the society and politics, the European dimensions of spatial development and planning are getting more and more important. Bound into a complex multi-tier system of planning and decision-making, spatial planners have to develop appropriate strategies to react to the many demographic, ecological, economic and cultural challenges of urban and regional development. The course will give an overview of the institutions and influential actors of spatial development in Europe. Major trends of spatial development will be sketched. Exemplarily, policies and strategies will be assessed, which aim to address internationalization at metropolitan, national and European levels. In addition to the above lectures, it is planned to invite special guests from other European cities (Milan, Antwerp, Lyon, Brussels, Helsinki or Munich) to talk about the European dimension of city development.
