Abstract

The course on intermediate macroeconomics focuses on topics in monetary economics, labor economics and the basics in growth theory. Additionally, the students get an overview over the role of the intertemporal budget constraints and over the different schools of thought in macroeconomics.

Objective

Students obtain a deeper understanding of some important macroeconomic issues.

Content

1. Schools of thought (monetarists, Keynesianism, real business cycles, classical economists, Neoclassical synthesis), benefits of stabilization policy 2. Ricardian equivalence, intertemporal budget constraints, life-cycle, permanent-income hypothesis 3. Monetary economics: Lucas supply model, time-inconsistency, central banks and their policies, inflation targeting, monetary targeting, Taylor rule, exchange-rate regimes, Dornbusch overshooting model, New Keynesian models 4. Banks and financial crises: role of banks, market-based vs. bank-based, banking regulation: Basle II, IMF, lender of last resort, asset price bubbles, fundamental value 5. Labor market: unemployment, unions, minimum wage, insider-outsider conflict, efficiency wages 6. Long-run growth: neoclassical growth model
