Abstract

The topics concern classical problems in geometry, including in particular links to topology and number theory. At as many places as possible relations to grammar school mathematics will be highlighted.

Objective

To deepen the students knowledge in geometry emphasizing relations to grammar school mathematics.

Content

Topics covered concern fundamental geometric notions and their properties such as volume (Dehn's theorem, the Banach-Tarski-Hausdorff paradox et.al.); topological questions (given a plane closed curve k, do there exist any rectangles or even squares with their vortices being placed on k?); the solvability of construction problems in terms of the allowed tools (mathematics of origami, classical construction problems); geometry of convex sets (Helly's theorem, Minkowski's theorem, geometry of numbers) et.al.
