Abstract

This course is intended for students who wish to improve their grammatical awareness and performance while engaged in reading, listening or writing activities. Given that it is a blended learning course, students must be prepared to work autonomously on a programme designed to address their own specific grammar needs.

Objective

The course aims to increase students’ ability to manipulate grammatical constructions, appropriate to the linguistic level, as an aid to communicating more clearly or to better understand texts that are relevant to their field of study.

Content

The first part of the course will concentrate on identifying and practising individual grammar items which the student considers difficult. Each student will then be required to apply this grammatical analysis to their own field of study in the form of a mini-project. Finally, a group project will focus again on grammatical constructions and how, based on the students’ learning experience on the course, a learning pack could be devised for future participants.

Resources

Lecture Notes

Any teaching materials related to the course will be mailed to the students before each lesson, there is also a course website. However, most class time involves students working at a computer screen on the project they will have constructed for themselves.

Literature

The use of the internet and materials from the self-access centre will be a fundamental component of the course.
