The elective „User Surface“ deals with researching the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual relationship between architecture, people and their needs. This analysis of the user surface aims to improve the sensitivity of emotional communication with our architectural environment. Architecture is not only seen as an abstract spatial aesthetic phenomenon, but is to be experienced directly with all senses. How do we perceive an architectural space holistically? How can ambience and atmospheres be conceived, and, based on this perception, how can they consciously be designed? The user surface works as an interface between people and architecture, enabling a direct and intuitive communication between things and their users. This immediate relationship is subject to extensive research, which subsequently gets visualized through film, video and photography, allowing the experience of an emotional approach in a spontaneous and playful manner. Since the beginning of architectural modernism, perception has shifted away from the physical presence of the surfaces of a building to the more abstract phenomena such as space, leaving a deficiency in the direct physical and emotional relationship between people and architecture. The research deals with the didactical communication of a sensual approach during the design process. In this regard, film has proved to be a very suitable medium. It is capable of describing the sensuality of architectural space atmospherically by focusing on the subjective physical perception. Beyond that film, unlike any other medium, is able to convey a feeling of Zeitgeist emotionally and to project into the future.
