Abstract

Urban physicsObjectives:• Basic knowledge of wind, wind comfort, driving rain, pollutant dispersion in the urban context• Importance of microclimate in evaluation of building performance• Application of the knowledge by the study of case studies

Content

1. Wind • General: definitions • Wind flow in the built environment and around buildings • Wind comfort analysis: method • Wind tunnel research and computational fluid dynamics • Case studies: wind comfort around high rise buildings for pedestrians, in sport stadia, pas-sages and building terraces, wind screens • Cross ventilation and thermal comfort of buildings in hot humid countries 2. Driving rain and its consequences • General: definitions • Driving rain on buildings: methodology, wind blocking effect, rain water run-off • Case studies: soiling of building facades, salt efflorescences, rain water penetration, moisture design for driving rain 3. Pollutant dispersion in the urban environment • General: definitions • Case studies: chimney, exhaust
