Abstract
The Department Store
Objective
The themes considers historical periods more deeply. Personalities or specific topics will be examined paradigmatically. Besides the transmition of knowledge the main intention is an introduction into the methodology of historical research. Active participation by students is required.
Content
This elective course is focussed on the question how the department store as a new building type of the 19th century has developed from its beginnings until today. Together we will closely examine a case study in order to trace characteristic developments that influenced the change of merchandise presentation, window display and advertisement. Such typical changes will serve as indicators for the role of the department store in the city and its social structure.
