Abstract

In the training of architects, topics related to preservation can be demonstrated only through examples. Preservation of Cultural Heritage I focuses on teaching the strategies for analysis and documentation of highly valuable objects. The purpose is to acquire contextual knowledge and to learn to connect analysis with the development of concepts for an intelligent continuation of use.

Objective

In the elective subject Preservation of Cultural Heritage I, students of architecture will learn methods of building analysis. They will practice these methods as they conduct a typical survey of a protected object, organize their insights in context, analyze sources and evaluate literature. Based on this, they will develop strategies for maintaining value, identifying and assessing possibilities for wise preservation measures.

Content

This elective will build on the techniques and procedures that were taught during the basic studies and will provide a deeper level of coverage of topics related to building research conducted on highly valuable and protected objects. As opposed to the more general topics that are taught in the Master’s program “Building within the Existing”, the elective will focus on a highly valuable object. Besides teaching alternative methods of analysis, it also focuses on understanding of knowledge in context (theoretical, historical, material and engineering sciences) as well as on analysis connected to the development of concepts for maintenance and continuation of use. The concepts will be presented as small planning exercises. The topic for the fall semester will probably be: The Gymnasiums of Kantonschule Zürich
