Abstract

Asceticism & Excess

Objective

The seminar for architectural theory conveys interdisciplinary approaches and methods that connect the products of (primarily architectural) design with contemporary culture. The topics are not presented in a chronological order, which allows an enhanced assessment of questions of the architectonic. Interpretations and resonances are more important than epochal placement. The participants are asked to transgress the boarders between the realms of culture and to construct relations between architecture and art, literature, cinema or music. Topics of the seminar series (including “Skin”, “Time”, “Identity”, “Atmosphere”, “Mimesis” or “The Beautiful”) allow different forms of contextualization. Student presentations are part of the framework of the sessions as well as visiting lectures from experts. Starting from relevant texts and case studies of architecture, urban design and arts we are searching for a critical application of theses, methods and conceptual models. Students are invited to express their own perspective and to substantiate it with text analyses and case studies, and put them to discussion.
