Abstract

Topics related to preservation of cultural heritage are taught from an academic perspective. In light of the high risk of loss within the historical built environment, new principles for long-term decisions regarding preservation are necessary. Conservation concepts for the future will consider cultural heritage in terms of potential loss of knowledge, techniques, and overall system stability.

Objective

The future generation of decision makers - ranging from scientific researchers to specialists in planning, politics, economy and federal institutions - will learn how to judge and act competently regarding questions of conservation of historical monuments and preservation of cultural heritage.

Content

Topics will be as follows: • History and theory of preservation of cultural heritage • Conservation science • Historical techniques and constructions • History of materials and technology • Methods of architectural research and documentation • Institutional regimes • Systems-theoretical principles of long-term processes • Long-term management and maintenance of buildings The course of study will be interdisciplinary, linking topics in cultural history, technology and economics. Basic principles, terminology and methods in the field of preservation of cultural heritage and conservation but also conceptual strategic questions related to maintaining the value of cultural heritage are central to the course of study. The program is linked to the course of study “Sustainable Management of Man-Made Resources” and will be conducted with partners of TU München.
