Seismic Design of Structures II
Erdbebensicherung von Bauwerken II
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:24:02
Abstract
Advanced earthquake engineering. 1) Advanced topics in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of structures. 2) Seismic behaviour and design of masonry structures. 3) Risk-based assessment and retrofit of existing buildings. 4) Seismic design of bridges. 5) Fundamentals of seismic isolation.
Objective
During the course students shall learn: 1) How to use the newest force-based and displacement-based analysis methods. 2) The peculiarities of the nonlinear, plastic, seismic behaviour of structures and the differences to the elastic behaviour. 3) The seismic assessment of existing buildings and the differences to the seismic design of new buildings.
Content
1) Nonlinear static and dynamic analysis methods: Nonlinear static procedures based either on the initial or on the secant (Direct Displacement Based Design) stiffness of the structure. Fundamentals of nonlinear time-history analysis and introduction to relevant computer programs. 2) Masonry structures: Masonry properties, strength and deformation of unreinforced masonry structural elements, seismic behaviour and design of unreinforced masonry structures. 3) Existing buildings: Condition assessment, assessment of the seismic safety, risk-based assessment of the commensurability, retrofit strategies, case studies. 4) Bridges: Seismic vulnerability, seismic analysis and design. 5) Seismic isolation: The basic concept, isolation systems, theoretical basis, simplified analysis methods, case studies.
