Abstract

Moisture transport and related degradation processes in building and civil engineering materials and structures; concepts of reliability analysis, poromechanics and multiscale analysis; analysis of damage cases.

Objective

- Basic knowledge of moisture transport and related degradation processes in building and civil engineering materials and structures - Introduction to concepts of reliability analysis, poromechanics and multiscale analysis - Application of knowledge for the analysis of damage cases

Content

1. Moisture related damage: introduction and examples 2. Introduction to durability and reliability: definition, methodology, stochastic approaches, determination of failure criteria 3. Moisture transport in porous materials - moisture in open porous materials .sorption .hysteresis - moisture transport in porous materials .vapour transport .liquid transport .applications : capillary uptake, pressure infiltration, rising damp, drying, hydrophobic treatment - introduction to non-isothermal moisture transport 4. Introduction to poromechanics - introduction to poro-elasticity in unsaturated porous media, - damage due to restrained swelling and shrinking - chemical damage: salt damage due to crystallisation - case study: cracking and blistering of outside renderings 5. New advances in durability: - Stochastic approach to durability: concepts, characterization of environmental loads, examples - Multiscale multiphysics approach to porous materials: mechanical, transport processes and coupling phenomena - Example: multiscale multiphysics of wood
