Abstract

Application of basic physical concepts to glaciers and ice caps.

Objective

Goal of the course is to understand the dynamics of ice sheets, ice streams and glaciers, and their reaction to changes of ambient conditions such as surface temperature and precipitation, and water supply to the base. Important topics include mass balance, ice deformation, basal motion, temperature evolution, englacial and basal hydraulics, and their influence on glacier flow and geometry.
