Abstract

The courses Chinese III and IV are building upon the work done in the courses I and II. Two hundred more characters will be added, bringing the total up to six hundred. At the end of the two courses the students should be able to read simple texts in modern Chinese.

Objective

The courses will help the students to master the communication of everyday life. Furthermore, they shall acquire the basic competence not only to understand a medium which is fundamentally different from the European languages, but also the cultural context in which this medium operates.

Content

The courses Chinese III and IV are building upon the work done in the courses I and II. At the end of the fourth semester the students will have learnt to write about 750 characters which is the rough equivalent of 1400 words. This will be supplemented with teachings of the basic grammatical rules and frequent exercises in conversational Chinese. These activities will make up the bulk of the lessons. At the end of course IV, the students will have gained the knowledge required for the first level of the Standard Examination for Chinese as a Foreign Language (HSK).
