Abstract
Introductory course on important elements of the ecology of mountain forests of the temperate zone, with a focus on tree population dynamics and ecosystem ecology. The two major goals are to provide to students the scientific basis for the management of these systems, and to introduce students to the modern state-of-the-art research on selected topics.
Objective
• To further the understanding and analysis of factors and processes that determine the structure, functioning and dynamics of mountain forest ecosystems, based on case studies. • To practice quantitative, causal analyses. • To introduce students to the current, largely English-language research literature on mountain forest ecology.
Content
Introduction to the quantitative and qualitative significance of mountains and mountain forests Special aspects of limiting factors in mountain forests Overview of site classification in mountain forests according to the NaiS guidelines Case studies based on recent literature
