Advanced Solid State Physics
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:24:13
Abstract
This course is an extension of the introductory course on solid state physics.
Objective
The goal is to study how novel phenomena emerge in the solid state.
Content
= General concepts in condensed matter physics = Phase transitions and critical phenomena . complex structures and phase transitions . condensation (in real and in momentum space) . the order parameter . symmetries . order and disorder . mean field theory . beyond mean field theory . scaling = Fermi surface instabilities (el - el, el-lattice interactions) . charge density waves CDW . spin density waves SDW . dynamics of CDW and SDW = Photons interacting with materials . collective excitations = Electron correlations in solids . Mott insulator . strong correlation and new phenomena
Resources
Lecture Notes
Students will get an informal summary of the topics discussed in the course. The numerous data graphs from original publications, introduced in the lectures as the connection to the work in the laboratory and as the motivation for the discussions, will be distributed as well. Together with the lecture notes, they are a good starting point for further inquiry.
Literature
A list of books will be distributed. Furthermore, numerous original publication articles will be distributed as the semester goes on.
