Abstract

This course is an advanced-level seminar covering the external relations of the EU in various policy areas and towards different groups of non-member states.

Objective

This course aims at familiarizing students with different approaches to understanding the EU's external relations as well as with specific external policies and relationships that the EU entertains with different (groups of) countries.

Content

This course is an advanced-level seminar covering the external relations of the EU in various policy areas and towards different groups of non-member states. Starting with a discussion of competing conceptualizations of the EU's actorness and foreign policy roles, it deals with EU trade, development, environmental, security and democracy promotion policies and analyzes EU enlargement as well as relations with Switzerland, the European Economic Area, the Western Balkans and the European Neighborhood.
