Abstract
Building Physics II: Moistureheat conduction, U-value (only autumn 08)heat and moisture transport, prevention of moisture damage, design and hygrothermal performance analysis of building components
Objective
Objectives • basic knowledge of heat and moisture transport • application of knowledge for prevention of moisture damage • design and hygrothermal performance analysis of building components
Content
1. Heat Conduction • Transport, unidimensional, thermal conductance, U-value, temperature gradient 2.Water vapour transport • Definitions – vapour and air • Vapour transport and storage in porous materials • Applications: interstitial condensation (extended Glaser method), surface condensation, solar-driven inwards vapour flow and mould growth • Combined heat/air/vapour transport: cavity ventilation and drying 3.Moisture balance of a room: moisture buffering 4.Liquid water transport • Definitions: capillarity • Liquid transport and storage in porous materials • Rain and wind driven rain • Capillary break and rain screen • Applications: rising damp, drying, moisture related damage 5.Construction and performance analysis of building envelopes • Environmental loads: exterior, interior • Notions related to airtightness • Cavity wall, wood frame wall, rendered wall, aluminium curtain walls • Flat and cathedral roof • Underground enclosures • Evaluation of performance, use of HAM simulation tools
