Abstract
Beside the technical education of engineers knowledge about economic aspects of an enterprise becomes more and more important for the personal career. The goal of the lecture is to give an overview about operational practices of an enterprise. Guided by a specific case study the connection between technical requirements and economic results of an enterprise are demonstrated.

The goal of the lecture is to give an overview about operational practices of an enterprise. Guided by a specific case study the connection between technical requirements and economic results of an enterprise are demonstrated.
Content
After a short introduction about the purpose of an enterprice, its control and the role of the engineer will be explained by the example of surge arresters. By some examples the accounting principles will be presented focusing on the meaning and goal of the balance sheet, the income statement and the cash flow statement. The importance of the capital expenditure accounting is explained which considers beside product related cost factors like functionality, design and variety of variants, also process related cost factors like personnel, infrastructure and make or buy decisions. Taking the example of surge arresters the importance of the market for an enterprice will be outlined. Referring to different types of markets proper pricing of products is decisive for the success of an enterprise considering its cost structure and market position. By specific consideration of the engineers work the importance of the Research and Development process and its impact on the success of an enterprice will be explained.
