Abstract

This lecture focuses on foundations of management decisions in which IT plays a direct or indirect role. Relationships between technological and managerial concepts are investigated in detail.

Objective

The goal of the lecture is to give an understanding of the relationship between managerial and IT concepts, and to provide a basis to assess the opportunities and limits of ICT. Students should understand and be able to explain: Theoretical foundations • The impact of ICT on transaction and production costs • The consequences of MIS for business network relationships • The success factors of ICT that support increasing returns and market domination Information Systems • The concepts and mechanisms of data and function integration in information systems • The relevance of integrated information systems for efficient firms • The potential and limits of integrating information systems Business Innovation • The nature of and drivers towards business process orientation • The nature and challenges of business process redesign
