Abstract
Architectural and Cultural History of the Postwar Period in Europe and North America
Objective
The goal of the lecture course is to depict paradigmatically via these themes the relationship of architectural and discursive practices between autonomy and mutual dependence within the cultural milieu of the postwar period.
Content
The subject of this lecture course is the architecture of the postwar period in Western Europe and North America (ca. 1943–66). It examines the architectural discourse and its strategies for dealing with constantly changing technical inventions and social practices. Consequently, the focus will be less on individual architects or buildings than on various themes that determined the architecture of the period under such headings as the “New Monumentality” or “New Brutalism,” “Habitat” or “Mobility,” “Science Fiction” or “Corporate Design.”
