Abstract
Environmental Microbiology. Introductory notes on general virology. Insight into the dynamic interaction between human activities and the manifestation of infectious diseases in humans and animals. To know viruses as special forms of infectious agents.
Objective
Environmental Microbiology. Insight into the dynamic interaction between human activities and the manifestation of infectious diseases in humans and animals. To know viruses as special forms of infectious agents. Special emphasis is given to emerging diseases such as and avian flu (H5N1) and noroviruses (cause of gastroenteritis) as well as old diseases, such as rabies and anthrax.
Content
The lecture focusses on the manifestation of infectious diseases under human influence. Special emphasis is given to viruses, that represent a special form of infectious agents. Topics treated are listed below: 1) How viruses manage their host cells 2) Water pollution and microbial water quality: noroviruses 3) Polio viruses and poliomyelitis: final stage of global eradication? 4) Rabies, a classic zoonotic disease: viruses transmitted from vertebrates to man 5) Avian flu and emergence of pandemic human influenza 5) Tick-borne encephalitis is emerging: should one vaccinate or not?
