Abstract

Professional handling of the historical building stock calls for a wide range of know-how and abilities–from methods of historical building research and life cycle analysis to historical knowledge and competence in technical and constructional processes. The MAS program aims to communicate knowledge which is indispensable for the adequate handling of high-quality historic buildings.

Objective

The course communicates general knowledge in the following fields: history and theory of Conservation, knowledge of historical building construction, history of material and technology, methods of building research and documentation, damage assessment, restauration and conservation methods, legal background and instruments, evaluation methods, long-term and sustainable management of buildings and building stock, process control of preservation projects. The studies are interdisciplinary – cultural, historical, technical and economic topics are linked.

Content

Buildings are long-term products. Ninety percent of the buildings and infrastructure that will be used in the year 2030 are already in existence. The dynamics of building-stock development are still fairly slow – cities and settlements are the result of long-term and collective processes, and theyare, therefore, non-renewable cultural and material resources. Future generations of architects and engineers will have to work more and more in the fields of conservation, rehabilitation and rebuilding – even today more than two thirds of all building jobs take place in these fields.
