Abstract

To read a theatrical text is one thing, to see the play on stage is another. Transmission of a theatrical production by film would be a third possibility. Using the example of three plays by the author Max Frisch, this third form of expression is compared to the respective texts.

Objective

To read a theatrical text is one thing, to see the play on stage is another. Transmission of a theatrical production by film would be a third possibility. Using the example of three plays by the author Max Frisch, this third form of expression is compared to the respective texts. To begin with ANDORRA, which premiered at the Schauspielhaus Zurich in 1961. The same production with the same actors was recorded in 1964 at the Television Studio in Hamburg. The second example, the comedy DON JUAN OR THE LOVE OF GEOMETRY provoked 1953 in Zurich violent emotions, as some people understood it as an attack to the institution marriage. In 2001 a brilliant staging of this play was recorded at the Theatre of Josephstadt Vienna. The finale play is Frisch’s last and probably most unconventional TRIPTYCH. It is about death and the dead ones, and is a plea for life — because only the living have the opportunity to change ideas and shift their thoughts. It was first showed 1981 in Vienna and recorded by Austrian Television.
