Abstract

Being part of the waterscape experiment, this design studio concerns the shifting river landscapes of Switzerland. Existing sites are worked topographically at a –for architects - unusual large design scale. The design method combines traditional landscape design and modelling techniques with the use of advanced CNC technology.

Objective

The problematic of this design studio is to apprehend the extreme increase of waterhights and to enhance the continuity of the lakeshore and the qualities of accesses to the different waters such as lake, wild water and drainage canals. Located between Locarno and Ascona, the site is an extreme flat surface composed of dispared housing, industries and several touristic infrastructures. The students have to structure the site to accept both a larger volume of water and dried-up areas programmed to receive agriculture, urbanization or leisure activities. The studio focuses on topographic modulations, water level variation, planning surfaces and time-based strategies.

Content

This semester is part of the waterscape experiment, a design studio concerned with the shifting river landscapes of Switzerland. Students of architecture are asked for the first time to work topographically on existing sites such as river delta and abandoned airport at a fairly large design scale (500Ha). The design method combines traditional landscape design and modelling techniques with the use of advanced CNC technology to develop new environments better adapted to flooding and natural erosion in the Alps. The goal of this studio is to create a palette of projects at the interface between wild mountain waters, lake and the city. The architecture of the landscape that ensues shows a great range of possibilities for future uses and developments. The waterscape designs are part of a new landscape identity to come in Switzerland. This visionary design work done in collaboration with Swiss federal water engineers shows how young architects can engage their creativity in bigger environmental projects for the future.
