Abstract
Already Pygmalion dreamt of creating, with the help of the plastic arts, living bodies. But only around 1900 – just when synthetic plastics was invented – scientists discovered the grounds of the plasticity of living things. We follows the history of the idea of the plastic from antiquity up to the present, in which plastic is a technical as well as a biological concept.
