Abstract
This course introduces the basic concepts, methods, and applications of social network analysis (SNA) with selected empirical studies and hands-on computer exercises.
Objective
Upon completion of this course, students should (1) have acquired a basic understanding of the theories and methods of social network analysis, (2) they are able to apply these methods with appropriate software and (3) critically assess power and weakness of the network approach.
Content
Die Soziale Netzwerkanalyse beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie soziale Akteure (Personen oder Organisationen) miteinander in Beziehung stehen, welche Beziehungsmuster sie dabei bilden und wie mittels generativer Prozesse solche Strukturen entstehen und sich verändern. In der Veranstaltung werden zuerst die theoretischen Grundlagen erarbeitet. Danach konzentrieren wir uns auf ausgewählte empirische Studien, die von den Studierenden in Kurzvorträgen präsentiert werden. Die Anwendungen der Netzwerkanalyse sind sehr vielfältig. Behandelt werden die Konzepte Zentralität, Cliquen, Rollen und Positionen, Einfluss von Netzwerken bei der Arbeitssuche, Diffusion von Innovationen, Interlocking Directorates, Small Worlds und „skalenfreie“ Netzwerke. Ergänzt wird die Veranstaltung durch eine Einführung in R, Pajek und UCINET.
