Pairi-Daeza: Choreography
Pairi-Daeza: Choreographie
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:30:03
Abstract
The term "pairi-daeza" (Persian for "a wall surrounding a garden") is the starting point for an elective series, which explores basic elements of landscape architecture. This semester deals with "Choreography". The students will examine the relationship between spatial structures and movement and will design a public space for movement.
Objective
The central question students are going to be dealing with is: What causes the way I move? „Choreography“ means the artistic design and the fixing of the steps and movements of a dance. The elective understands the term broadly: Everyone is a dancer and every place can be a stage. The glacial embankments, spreading between the Sihl in the West and Lake Zurich in the East, are at disposal. At the Rietberg and the hill of the Sihl and Bühl, with their views onto the Lake, city and the Glarner Alps, nearness and distance can be experienced. The students chose a space within the given perimeter and thus sharpen their topological sensibilities. They develop a choreography, whereby the spatial and temporal expansion is up to them. The results can vary between landscape architecture, dance, and Fine Art and will therefore be articulated in a variety of media (performance, video, intervention, model, sketch, photography, plan, text, notation).
Content
Pairi-daeza is Persian for "a wall enclosing a garden". This term is the starting point of an elective, which investigates the basic elements of landscape design. Following ‚peri’ and ‚threshold’, ‚water’, and ‘vegetation’ this elective deals with the topic ‘choreography’. The elective deals with the arrangement of movement in the south-west of Zurich, with its grading of moraines on the left side of the lake and the generous parks. The structure formed by the parks (Arboretum, Belvoir- und Rieterpark, Kollerwiese) and street-spaces allows for various qualities of movement to become experiencable. The students investigate relationships between spatial structures and movement, and develop a choreography in the public space. Via walks, workshops and lectures movement will be tested and discussed. Part of the course is the dancer and choreographer Anna Huber.
