Abstract

Organising, writing and editing a short scientific text in English.How to write effective sentences and effective paragraphs.How to improve style resulting in a better readability of the text.

Objective

Topics: - Organisation of a typical diploma thesis or technical report. - Linguistic features of different sections of a diploma thesis or technical report. - Ways to write effective sentences and effective paragraphs. - Ways to improve style resulting in a better readability of the text. - Grammar, and stylistic exercises. - Peer review and editing of text drafts. The first session will include a discussion of participants’ particular needs. The course will look at themes of general interest, but will try to reflect the particular concerns and specific subject areas of the participants. Participants will be expected to own a dictionary and bring it to class. Participants will be required to: - Attend regularly - Participate actively - Do a minimum of 1 – 2 hours work at home, with writing being an integral part of the homework. - Assessment will be based on presentation of an improved version of a text (extended abstract or introduction) on a topic related to the participant’s field.
