Basics in ecotoxicology
Grundlagen in der Ökotoxikologie
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:28:19
Abstract
Introduction in methods and basics in ecotoxicology. Behaviour and bioavailability of pollutants in the environment. First insights in toxic effects, from the molecular level to ecosystem level. Linking the structure of pollutants with behaviour and effects.
Objective
The students know the major classes of contaminants, know and understand the fate and behaviour of pollutants in the environment, uptake and transformation processes in organisms, mechanisms of effects in cells, tissues, organisms and populations. They will learn to use the mechanistic considerations for risk assessment purposes.
Content
Overview, concepts, and specific mechanisms will, with the use of many examples, be teached Cellular- and organ-specific toxic effects. Transport through membranbes and accumulation of pollutants. Bioactivation and reactive metabolites. Oxidative stress and signalling pathways. Apoptosis and necrosis as pollutant-induced stress responses. Interactions with and damage of biomolecules. Receptor-mediated toxicity. Inhibition of enzyme activities, disturbed energy production. pollutant-induced gene expression and regulation.
