Abstract

Sociology II deals in the first part with domestic life-style sociology. From a historical point of view the changes in dwelling styles and dwelling forms over the last two centuries are investigated. The second part of the course deals with the sociology of architectural development, examining thereby the roles played by the persons, institutions and architectural processes involved.

Objective

This series of lectures should enable students to comprehend architecture in its social context. It approaches the architectural profession from two different angles: macro-sociological and micro-sociological.

Content

Sociology II focuses on micro-sociological aspects, dealing in the first part with domestic life-style sociology. From a historical point of view the changes in dwelling styles and ideals, living and dwelling forms and styles over the last two centuries are investigated. The second part of the course deals with the sociology of architectural development, examining thereby the roles played by the persons, institutions and architectural processes involved. This block of lectures investigates the actors and the contexts of their activities, and identifies the effects of social changes on architectural developments. The discipline and profession of "Architecture as an Institution" are examined from the historical point of view, dealing among others with the question of what makes the architecture discipline so special and what is the importance of specific aspects such as architectural competition and the “star system”. Finally, typical career models in the architecture profession are illustrated by case histories.
