Abstract

Concrete Science is a comprehensive course about the chemical and physical properties of concrete and its consitutents and how to measure these properties using conventional and innovative research techniques.

Objective

In this course you will gain a thorough understanding of common research methods and principles used to study the chemical and physical properties of concrete. You will learn how the macroscopic properties of concrete are related to its microstrucure and how to make a durable concrete.

Content

Program Lecture 1: Introduction (Ruffing/Bisschop) Lecture 2: Chemical and mineralogical composition of concrete constituents (Ruffing) Lecture 3: Hydration behaviour of concrete constiutents and their microstructure (Ruffing) Lecture 4: Concrete microscopy I: Light or electron microscopy? (Bisschop) Lecture 5: Concrete microscopy II: Microstructure quantification (Bisschop) Lecture 6: Characterisation techniques for concrete constituents I: X-ray (Ruffing) Lecture 7: Characterisation techniques for concrete constituents II: Thermal analysis and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (Ruffing) Lecture 8: Other experimental techniques and computer simulation (Ruffing) Lecture 9: Practical Part I (Ruffing/Bisschop) Lecture 10: Practical Part II (Ruffing/Bisschop) Lecture 11: Concrete durability I: Shrinkage, creep and fatigue (Bisschop) Lecture 12: Concrete durability II: Transport properties (Bisschop) Lecture 13: Concrete durability III: Chemical deterioration (Bisschop) Lecture 14: Oral examination (Ruffing/Bisschop)
