Abstract

Architectural and Cultural History of the Postwar Period in Europe and North America

Objective

The objective of the lecture course is to use the main themes of postwar architecture to present paradigmatically the relationship between architectural and discursive practices between autonomy and mutual dependence within the cultural sphere of this period.

Content

The object of this lecture course is postwar architecture in Western Europe and North America (circa 1943–90). It will examine the architectural discourse and its strategies for dealing with constantly changing technical inventions and social practices. The focus will thus be less on individual architects or single buildings than on various themes that defined the architecture of the time with concepts such as “New Monumentality” or “New Brutalism,” “Habitat” or “Mobility,” “Science Fiction” or “Corporate Design,” “Pop Architecture” or “Deconstruction.”
