Physics behind Modern Technologies
Physik hinter modernen Technologien
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:29:41
Abstract
This course belongs to MAS SHE programme for physics. Based on the example of solar cells various concepts of physics are discussed, which are necessary to understand the functioning of solar cells.
Objective
The goal of this course is the discussion of important physics concepts in the context of a modern technology. Questions which may arise in the high school teaching are addressed. This course shall also be a basis to break complex physics in a correct way down to an elementary level.
Content
This course deals with the following points in connection with the principle of solar cells as an example of modern technologies: - elementary discussion of electronic properties of semiconductors - elementary discussion of pn-junctions and their applications, in particular, in the structure of solar cells - introduction to the classical understanding of light (from ray optics to light as an electromagnetic wave) - light in the context of quantum mechanics (Planck, Einstein, quantum transitions) - solid state physics aspects of solar cells (band theory, semiconductors, ...) - physics of global warming (radiation law and green house effect) In all chapters connections to well-known technological applications will be drawn.
