Abstract

Field course in Vegetation and Site Conditions to identify relationships between plant communities and site conditions thus increasing the knowledge of native grassland and forest ecosystems. Vegetation assessments are carried out and interpreted using indicator values and diversity indices. These data are complemented by measurements of plant ecophysiology, microclimate and soil factors.

Objective

Understanding interactions between vegetation, microclimate and soil. Acquiring skills in certain methods of ecological measuring techniques. Increasing knowledge of native grassland and forest ecosystems. Interpretation and presentation of relationships.

Content

Vegetation assessments using different methods and determining plant species. Calculation of mean indicator values and diversity indices. Measurements on the ecophysiology of plants and investigation of microclimate and soil factors if of significant importance for the vegetation. Comparison of different measuring techniques. Interpretation and presentation of results, emphasising the interrelation between vegetation and abiotic factors.
