Abstract

Models for a new society: architecture in the USSR

Objective

This course offers a profound and paradigmatic examination of a particular historical period, a personality or a specific topic from the area of the history of art and architecture.

Content

Following the October Revolution in Russia in 1917, a new social order was established, which was expressed in new architectural tasks based on an innovative approach to architecture. In addition to examining the early utopian projects, this lecture-course, using an approach based on problem history, will also present important examples of new types of building, such as workers’ clubs and commune buildings, and will examine them in their political and cultural context. The interrelationships between hopes for industrialization, actual progress in industrialization, and building activity will also be analysed. The question of the relationship between architecture and the social model arises once again in connection with the failure of the innovative concepts involved under Stalin and the forced establishment of a newly invented ‘classicism’.
