Abstract

Fracture in a material takes place with the release of stored strain energy, which is consumed by nucleating new crack surfaces and emitting elastic waves. The latter is defined as the acoustic emission (AE) phenomenon. In the course the theory of AE is presented, including the source mechanisms and the moment tensor analysis for characterization of crack kinematics.

Objective

Clear understanding of AE phenomena based on knowledge of theoretical backgrounds, at a level for practical applications

Content

For evaluation of structural integrity, AE techniques have been applied to a variety of structures and infrastructures. Successful applications to concrete, superstructures of buildings and bridges, and substructures including rock slope stability are presented. Many of these structures are currently known to have aged and deteriorated after long-year service. AE measurement is expected to become a powerful technique for crack and damage evaluation in (these existing) structures.
