Kernreaktorpraktikum
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:18:52
Abstract
Experiments on a nuclear training reactor and power plant simulators provide detailed knowledge on construction, function and dynamics of nuclear reactors and nuclear power plants during transients and accidents.
Objective
Understanding of reactor kinetics and dynamics, knowledge on reactor and power plant construction and function, transients and accident scenarios.
Content
Kinetics of chain reaction, role of delayed neutrons, criticality, reactor period, dynamic feedback mechanisms (moderator temperature, fuel temperature, xenon poisoning, void effect), control of PWRs and BWRs , transients and accident scenarios, interaction between nuclear steam generation system and turbine cycle, function of reactor protection and safety system, control room and operator actions. The lab course consists in: Introduction into operation of critical assemblies (zero power reactors) Laboratory exercise at training reactor CROCUS, Lausanne Lab exercise at reactor simulator (PWR, BWR) of Kraftwerksschule at PSI Radiation protection lab exercise at Strahlenschutzschule of PSI One-day training at the Power Plant Simulator of NPP Mühleberg Simplified design calculations of a PWR, homework
