CIMST Interdisciplinary Summer School on Bio-medical Imaging

VVZ CR n/a

Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:19:47

Abstract

The school (25.06 – 06.07.07) will discuss the recent progress and challenges in biological and medical imaging. Cutting edge techniques using a wide range of imaging mechanisms will be put in the context of selected biomedical problems. In particular, multimodal and multiscale imaging methods as well as supporting technologies such as computer aided image analysis and modeling will be discussed.

Objective

The students learn to work in interdisciplinary teams to connect biology with modern imaging methods and its supporting technologies.

Content

The scope of the CIMST (Center for imaging science and technology, a competence center of ETH Zurich) summer school is to discuss advances and challenges of imaging and processing techniques in biology and medicine. On the basis of selected biomedical problems of multiple scales, the school will demonstrate cutting edge imaging methods (MRI, PET/ SPECT, IR/ OCT, 3D Time-resolved Microscopy, Optical Microscopy/ Fluorescence Microscopy, Single molecule and particle Microscopy, EM, X-ray), explain their possibilities and limitations, and discuss the advantages of combined approaches. In addition, different supporting technologies (Image reconstruction, Image enhancement, Image segmentation, Data management, Quantification and Tracking, Diffusion/ Modelling/ Simulation and Molecular reconstruction) will be introduced and discussed. The students will have theoretical training in the form of 45 and 75 minute lectures in the morning and practical sessions in the afternoon (either hands-on lab work or lab demonstrations, depending on the field). They will be also put into interdisciplinary groups of 4-5 persons (mixture of biologist, physicist, computer scientist, etc.) to work on a project, that they will present during the last two days of the school. Each day will end with a discussion round.
