Abstract
Academic Reading, speaking and vocabularyFocus:1. Reading - the reading process and reading strategies; micro- and macro text structure; the writer's stance and implicit meaning.2. Vocabulary - effective vocabulary learning. Academic vocabulary.3. Speaking - discussing themes in texts covered in class and at home.
Objective
The aim of this course is to enable students to gain confidence and practical skills in reading academic papers more effectively.
Content
The course covers three key areas: 1. Reading - the reading process and effective reading strategies; text structure at macro- and micro-levels. 2. Vocabulary - effective vocabulary learning. The Academic Word List; evaluative lexis and metaphor; the writer's stance; implicit meanings. 3. Speaking - to promote active use of new vocabulary in discussing themes in texts covered in class and at home.
